All if the boys have been working together on a merit badge called “pioneering”. This is the skill of using ropes and logs to build things, the way the early pioneers had to do it. After two theory lessons, they were ready to try building something, so tonight we worked together to build a ladder that can become part of a small tower! All of the boys can now tie a reliable clove hitch and can do good square lashings. I think their progress has been excellent!

A cool lizard

July 9th, 2009

One of the boys caught a small horny toad! It’s really a lizard, not a toad, but it’s a special kind that can hiss, drop its tail, squirt blood from a spot near its eye. This kind of lizard is covered with short spikes, and it has a lot of defense mechanisms, so people think it’s really fierce. But it’s really a small, shy animal that only eats ants. After a few minutes he let it go.

Ryan at the rifle range

The rifle range is cool! It’s not too crowded, so our other leader and I were able to shoot. Here’s are some pictures where Ryan is shooting.

Our scout troop

July 7th, 2009

Here’s a picture of the boys with the other leader in our group. We’re much smaller than most scout troops here, but all of the boys are willingly doing their share of the work, participating in merit badge classes, and actively being great scouts. It’s fun to be here with them.

At camp

July 7th, 2009

Ryan and I are at scout camp now. We had a great dinner and a fun day. It’s very beautiful here, and there are many activities. Ryan and I both failed our swimming test because of the cold water, but the others passed.

We will be working on a special award called, Duty To God at Camp. Each day we will have a short devotional and discuss a church topic. Everyone will read scriptures and write in a journal daily.

Our activities include rifle shooting, swimming, archery, crafts, canoeing, and many other interesting things. There was an evening campfire program with fun songs and skits.

Here are a couple of pictures:
